Amateur Radio, PMR446 & CB

What is the difference between a radio amateur and a person who operates Citizens’ Band (CB) radio, or PMR446?

A CB operator does not have to pass any examinations or obtain any qualifications before being allowed to operate.  It is a short range limited coverage service which may also be used for some business purposes.

PMR446 is another very short range system that does not need any exam or qualifications.

Amateur radio allows communication worldwide and into space, at powers of up to 400 Watts. The power and freedoms given mean that you need to know what you are doing before being given access to it. Amateur radio is for technology experimentation and personal enjoyment but business use is not allowed.
